ICFO honors the life and work of a pioneer in quantum optics and quantum information science

September 08, 2024

ICFOnians join the family of Jeff Kimble and all of the Caltech community in mourning the death of a remarkable person whose scientific contributions have made an important impact on the field of quantum optics and quantum information science and on the lives and careers of countless members of the scientific community.

Kimble is known for many pioneering experiments, such as in squeezed light generation, quantum teleportation, quantum networks, and cavity QED. Upon awarding him the Herbert Walther Award, one of many recognitions that Kimble received throughout his illustrious career, former OSA (Optica) CEO Elizabeth Rogan summarized, “Jeff has led a revolution in modern physics through his pioneering research in the coherent control of the interactions of light and matter. His work has changed the way physicists approach research in quantum optics, atomic physics, and quantum information science.”

ICFO’s research has been greatly influenced by Jeff Kimble’s work. His passion and fearlessness for scientific exploration of the unknown remains an inspiration to us all.

In his words, “If you know what you’re doing, don’t do it!”
